Lost Nation Summary

History

Lost Nation is a small city located in Jones County, Iowa. It is situated on the banks of the Wapsipinicon River, about 10 miles south of Anamosa. The city was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York, led by William and Mary Ann (Henderson) Smith. The Smiths had originally intended to settle in the nearby town of Olin, but when they arrived, they found that the land had already been claimed. They decided to move further south and founded Lost Nation.
The city was named after the Lost Nation Indian tribe, which had once inhabited the area. The tribe had been driven out by the US government in the 1830s, and the Smiths wanted to honor their memory.
The city grew slowly but steadily over the years, and by the turn of the 20th century, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The city was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a sawmill, and a brickyard.

Geography

Lost Nation is located in Jones County, Iowa, about 10 miles south of Anamosa. The city is situated on the banks of the Wapsipinicon River, which flows through the city and provides a scenic backdrop. The city is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland, and is located in the heart of the Driftless Area, a region of Iowa that was not affected by the last glacial period.
