Lamont Summary
Lamont is a small city located in Buchanan County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waterloo–Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Lamont was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after Lamont, New York, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1857.
In 1868, the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad built a line through the town, which helped to spur growth. The town was incorporated in 1876.

The economy of Lamont is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
