History

Knoxville was founded in 1846 by settlers from Knoxville, Tennessee. The city was named after the Tennessee city, and the first post office was established in 1847. The city was incorporated in 1855 and was designated as the county seat of Marion County in 1856.
Knoxville was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and the city was home to several prominent abolitionists, including the Reverend John G. Fee. The city was also the site of the first public school in Marion County, which was established in 1858.

The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $40,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,945 for females.
