Keota Summary

Keota, Iowa is a small town located in Keokuk County in the southeastern corner of the state. It is situated along the Iowa River, about 25 miles southeast of Iowa City. The population of Keota was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Keota is located at 41°17'25" North, 91°51'45" West (41.290278, -91.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

Keota was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Keokuk Indian tribe, which had inhabited the area prior to the settlers’ arrival. The town was incorporated in 1872.
Keota was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, which ran through the town from 1881 to 1971. The railroad was a major source of employment for the town, and it also brought in many visitors.

Economy

Keota’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile (351.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 391.7 per square mile (151.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
