Joice Summary

Joice is a small city located in Worth County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mason City Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Joice was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Norway. The town was named after Joice Heth, a former slave who was exhibited by P.T. Barnum. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Joice was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a creamery, a lumberyard, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a school, a church, and a newspaper.

The economy of Joice is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses.

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 145 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,211.1 people per square mile (468.2/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 508.9 per square mile (196.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 213 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
