Johnston, Iowa is a city located in Polk County, Iowa, United States. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 17,278 at the 2010 census, an increase of almost 100% from the 8,649 population in 2000.

History

Johnston was founded in 1851 by John F. Johnston, a settler from Ohio. The city was named after him. Johnston was incorporated as a city in 1878.

Geography

Johnston is located at 41°41'17" North, 93°41'45" West (41.6879, -93.6958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Johnston is home to several large employers, including Pioneer Hi-Bred International, a subsidiary of DuPont, and John Deere Financial. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 17,278 people, 6,717 households, and 4,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,072.2 people per square mile (414.7/km2). There were 7,072 housing units at an average density of 439.2 per square mile (169.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 2.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 4.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 6,717 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 28.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.4 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $76,845, and the median income for a family was $90,945. Males had a median income of $63,945 versus $41,945 for females.
