Iowa Falls Summary
Iowa Falls is a city located in Hardin County, Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The population was 5,238 at the 2010 census, a decrease from 5,528 in 2000.
Geography
Iowa Falls is located at 42°27′N 93°13′W (42.45, -93.22). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.45 square miles (11.52 km2), of which 4.44 square miles (11.50 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.02 km2) is water.
History
The area that is now Iowa Falls was first settled in 1845 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was originally known as “Ogden”, but was renamed “Iowa Falls” in 1856. The name was chosen to honor the falls of the Iowa River, which runs through the city.
The city was incorporated in 1876 and has since grown to become the county seat of Hardin County

The economy of Iowa Falls is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large employers, including Iowa Falls Feed & Grain, Iowa Falls Foundry, and Iowa Falls Machine & Tool.

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,238 people, 2,093 households, and 1,323 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,174.2 people per square mile (454.2/km2). There were 2,309 housing units at an average density of 519.2 per square mile (200.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $31,938 versus $22,938 for females.
