Independence Summary

Independence is a city located in Buchanan County, Iowa, United States. The population was 6,873 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Buchanan County.

History

Independence was founded in 1847 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The city was named after the Declaration of Independence. The first post office was established in 1848. The city was incorporated in 1855.
In the late 19th century, Independence was a major center for the coal mining industry. The city was also home to a large number of German immigrants.

Geography

Independence is located at 42°27′N 91°50′W (42.45, -91.83). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
