Hawarden Summary
Hawarden is a city located in Sioux County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sioux County.
History
The area that is now Hawarden was first settled in 1871 by a group of Dutch immigrants. The town was originally called “New Holland”, but was later changed to Hawarden in 1882. The name Hawarden was chosen to honor the birthplace of William of Orange, the Dutch prince who led the revolt against Spanish rule in the Netherlands in the 16th century.
The town was officially incorporated in 1883 and the first mayor was elected in 1884. The first post office was established in 1885.

Economy
The economy of Hawarden is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large farms, as well as a number of smaller family-owned farms. The city also has a number of businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, and a variety of restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,664.7 people per square mile (641.3/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 681.8 per square mile (263.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
