Geography

Grimes is located at 41°41'25" North, 93°45'17" West (41.690278, -93.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of it land.

History

Grimes was founded in 1881 by William H. Grimes, a railroad engineer. The town was named after him. The first post office was established in 1882. The town was incorporated in 1887.

Grimes is home to several businesses, including a John Deere dealership, a manufacturing plant, and a variety of retail stores. The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
