History

Fayette was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The city was named after Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, a French military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The city was incorporated in 1855, and the first post office was established in 1856.
