History

The area that is now Ely was first settled in 1845 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlement was originally known as “Ely’s Grove”, named after the first settler, John Ely. The settlement was incorporated as a city in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Ely was a major center for the lumber industry. The city was home to several sawmills and lumber yards, and the Cedar River was used to transport logs to the mills. The lumber industry declined in the early 20th century, and the city’s economy shifted to agriculture.
