Edgewood Summary

Edgewood is a small city located in Clayton County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Upper Iowa River, approximately 20 miles east of Dubuque. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Edgewood was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the nearby Edgewood Creek. The first post office was established in 1856. The town was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Edgewood was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a creamery, and a brickyard. The town also had a railroad station, which connected it to the rest of the state.

Geography

Edgewood is located at 42°30′N 91°17′W (42.50, -91.28). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Edgewood’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The town also has several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the city. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile (351.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 391.7 per square mile (151.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
