Donahue Summary

Donahue is a small city located in Scott County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Mississippi River, approximately 10 miles south of Davenport. The population of Donahue was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Donahue was founded in 1854 by Irish immigrants, who named the town after their leader, John Donahue. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon became a major hub for the lumber industry. The lumber industry was so successful that the town was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Donahue was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. This allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.

Geography

Donahue is located at 41°30'25" North, 90°37'45" West (41.506944, -90.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Donahue's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several small businesses, including a lumber mill, a grain elevator, and a feed mill. The town also has a small retail sector, with several stores and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in Donahue. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 667.1 per square mile (257.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
