Dike Summary
Dike is a small city located in Black Hawk County, Iowa. It is situated on the banks of the Cedar River and is part of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census.
History
Dike was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The city was named after the nearby Dike Creek, which was named after a Dutch settler who had built a dike to protect his land from flooding. The city was incorporated in 1876 and has remained a small, rural community ever since.
Geography
Dike is located at 42°30'25" North, 92°30'45" West (42.506944, -92.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Dike’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The city also has a few manufacturing plants, including a factory that produces farm equipment.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.3/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 674.2 per square mile (260.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females.
