History

Decatur City was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The city was named after Commodore Stephen Decatur, a naval hero of the War of 1812. The city was incorporated in 1851, and the first mayor was elected in 1852.

In the late 19th century, Decatur City was a thriving agricultural center. The city was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a creamery. The city also had a large livestock market, and was a major shipping point for livestock and grain.

In the early 20th century, Decatur City experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The city was home to several manufacturing plants, including a furniture factory, a canning factory, and a brickyard. The city also had a large retail district, with several stores and restaurants.
