De Soto is a small city located in Dallas County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Des Moines River, approximately 20 miles south of Des Moines. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

De Soto was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, who explored the area in the 16th century. The town was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, De Soto was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a flour mill, and a sawmill. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and several stores.

Geography

De Soto is located at 41°25'17" North, 94°14'45" West (41.4214, -94.2458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
