Conrad was founded in 1856 by a local settler, Conrad Kuehl. The town was originally known as Kuehlville, but the name was changed to Conrad in 1868. The town was incorporated in 1876 and has remained relatively unchanged since then.
In the early 1900s, Conrad was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, and a flour mill. The town also had a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
