Colfax Summary
Colfax is a city located in Jasper County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jasper County.
History
Colfax was founded in 1866 by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The city was named after Schuyler Colfax, the 17th Vice President of the United States. The first post office in Colfax was established in 1867.
In 1871, the first school was built in Colfax. The first newspaper, the Colfax Gazette, was established in 1872. The first bank was established in 1873.

Colfax is a small rural community with a population of 1,845. The economy is largely based on agriculture and related industries. The city is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a pharmacy, a restaurant, and a gas station.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 667.2 per square mile (258.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.45% White, 0.11% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.08% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
