Churdan Summary
Churdan is a small city located in Greene County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Middle Raccoon River, approximately 20 miles east of the state capital, Des Moines. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.
History
Churdan was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the Churdan family, who were early settlers in the area. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Churdan was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a lumberyard, a creamery, and a grain elevator. The town also had a newspaper, the Churdan Times, which was published from 1902 to 1915.
In the late 1950s, the town began to decline as the railroad industry declined. The last train to pass through Churdan was in the early 1960s.

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 145 families residing in the city. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 241 housing units at an average density of 400.0 per square mile (154.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
