Charles City Summary
Charles City, Iowa is a city located in Floyd County, Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Floyd County and is located along the Cedar River. The population was 7,652 at the 2010 census.
History
Charles City was founded in 1853 by Charles W. Clark, who named it after himself. The city was incorporated in 1857. The first post office was established in 1854.
The city was a major center of the lumber industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was also home to the first hydroelectric plant in Iowa, which was built in 1882.
Geography
Charles City is located at 43°5′25″N 92°37′17″W (43.090278, -92.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.45 square miles (14.12 km2), of which 5.43 square miles (14.07 km2) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2) is water.
Economy
Charles City is a major center for agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large employers, including John Deere, Charles City Manufacturing, and Charles City Industries. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 7,652 people, 3,093 households, and 1,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,408.2 people per square mile (543.7/km2). There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 609.3 per square mile (235.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,917. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $22,917 for females.
