Cedar Falls Summary

Cedar Falls, Iowa is a city located in Black Hawk County, Iowa, United States. It is part of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 39,260 at the 2010 census, and has since grown to an estimated 41,226 in 2019. Cedar Falls is home to the University of Northern Iowa, a public university with over 11,000 students.

History

Cedar Falls was founded in 1845 by William Sturgis. The city was named after the Cedar River, which runs through the city. The first settlers were mostly of German and Irish descent. The city was incorporated in 1857.
In the late 19th century, Cedar Falls was a major center for the lumber industry. The city was also home to several brickyards and a large number of manufacturing plants.

Geography

Cedar Falls is located at 42°28′N 92°26′W (42.4667, -92.4333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Cedar Falls is home to a variety of businesses and industries. The city is home to several large employers, including John Deere, the University of Northern Iowa, and the Cedar Falls Community School District. The city also has a thriving retail sector, with several large shopping centers and a variety of restaurants and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 39,260 people, 15,845 households, and 8,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,427.2 people per square mile (937.2/km2). There were 16,845 housing units at an average density of 1,053.3 per square mile (406.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 15,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 17.2% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 5.2% of families and 9.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
