Cascade Summary
Cascade is a city located in Dubuque County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dubuque, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Cascade was founded in 1845 by a group of German immigrants. The city was named after the nearby Cascade Creek. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the town grew slowly until the arrival of the railroad in 1872. The railroad brought new industry and jobs to the area, and the population began to grow rapidly. By the early 1900s, Cascade had become a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a brewery, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard.
In the late 19th century, Cascade was a popular destination for tourists, who came to enjoy the city's natural beauty and recreational activities. The city was also known for its annual Fourth of July celebration, which included a parade, fireworks, and a carnival.
Geography
Cascade is located at 42°30'25" North, 90°51'45" West (42.506944, -90.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Cascade's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The city is also home to a variety of manufacturing companies, including a plastics plant, a metal fabrication plant, and a food processing plant.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 617.2 per square mile (238.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.1% from other races, and 0.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
