Brighton Summary

Brighton is a small city located in Washington County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Cedar River, approximately 20 miles north of Iowa City. The population of Brighton was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Brighton was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Brighton, Ohio, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1855.

In 1856 the first school was built in Brighton The town was incorporated in 1858

In the late 19th century, Brighton was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a flour mill, and a sawmill.
