History
Atkins was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after one of the settlers, John Atkins. The first post office was established in 1855. The town was incorporated in 1876.
Atkins was a major stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, which ran through the town from 1881 to 1980. The railroad was a major employer in the town, and it also brought in many new residents.
