Allerton Summary

Allerton is a small city located in Wayne County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Chariton River, approximately 40 miles southeast of Des Moines. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Allerton was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Allerton family, who were among the first settlers. The town was incorporated in 1881.
Allerton was a major stop on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, which ran through the town from 1881 to 1971. The railroad was a major factor in the town's growth and development.

The economy of Allerton is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant.
The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,213.3 people per square mile (468.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 522.2 per square mile (201.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
