Afton Summary

Afton is a small city located in Union County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Union County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

Afton was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Afton, Ohio, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1855.
The town was incorporated in 1876. In 1877, the first school was built. In 1881, the first bank was established.
