Waubun Summary

Geography
Waubun is located at 47°25'25" North, 95°45'45" West (47.423, -95.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.
History
Waubun was founded in 1887 by the White Earth Band of Chippewa Indians. The name Waubun is derived from the Ojibwe language and means “dawn of day”. The city was incorporated in 1901 and has been a part of the White Earth Indian Reservation since its founding.
The city was originally a trading post and was home to a number of businesses, including a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a post office. The city was also home to a number of churches, including the Waubun Methodist Episcopal Church, which was founded in 1887.
Economy
Waubun’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to a number of farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and wheat. The city is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the White Earth Indian Reservation, which is home to a number of historical sites and cultural attractions.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,203.3 people per square mile (464.3/km2). There were 441 housing units at an average density of 487.8 per square mile (188.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.2% African American, 3.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,000. About 11.3% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
