Tower Summary

Tower is a city in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 862 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Duluth, Minnesota–Superior, Wisconsin metropolitan statistical area.

History

Tower was founded in 1882 by the Duluth and Iron Range Railway. The city was named after the nearby Tower Mine, which was named after the nearby Tower River. The Tower Mine was the first iron ore mine in the area, and it was the first to ship ore by rail. The city was incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Tower is located at the junction of U.S. Highway 169 and Minnesota State Highway 135. It is located on the western shore of Lake Vermilion, a large lake in northern Minnesota. The city is surrounded by the Superior National Forest.

Economy

Tower's economy is largely based on tourism. The city is home to several resorts and campgrounds, as well as a marina. The city also has a small retail sector, with several small shops and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 862 people, 393 households, and 225 families residing in the city. The population density was 545.3 people per square mile (210.9/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 294.3 per square mile (113.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 393 households, out of which 24.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.7% were non-families. 34.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.81.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.7% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
