Rothsay Summary

Rothsay is a small city located in Wilkin County, Minnesota. It is situated on the banks of the Red River of the North, and is part of the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. The city has a population of 1,072 as of the 2010 census, and is the county seat of Wilkin County.

History

Rothsay was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Norway. The city was named after the Norwegian town of Rødøy, which is located on the same river. The settlers were attracted to the area by the fertile soil and the abundance of timber. The first settlers built a sawmill and a flour mill, and the city quickly grew. By the early 1900s, Rothsay had become a thriving agricultural center, with a population of over 1,000.
In the early 20th century, the city was home to a number of businesses, including a creamery, a bank, a hotel, and a variety of stores. The city also had a number of churches, including a Lutheran church, a Methodist church, and a Catholic church.
