Oklee Summary

Oklee is a small city located in northwestern Minnesota, in the Red Lake County. It is situated on the Red Lake River, about 20 miles south of the Canadian border. The city was founded in 1883 and incorporated in 1902. As of the 2010 census, the population of Oklee was 441.

History

Oklee was founded in 1883 by a group of Norwegian settlers who had come to the area in search of a better life. The settlers named the town after Ole Olson, one of the original settlers. The town was officially incorporated in 1902.
In the early years, Oklee was a farming community, with the main crops being wheat, oats, and barley. The town also had a sawmill, a creamery, and a general store. In the 1920s, the town began to grow and expand, with the addition of a bank, a post office, and a school.
In the 1950s, Oklee began to experience a decline in population as many of the younger residents moved away in search of better job opportunities. However, the town was able to remain stable due to its strong agricultural base.
