Lengby Summary
Lengby is a small unincorporated community located in northwestern Minnesota, in Polk County. It is situated on the eastern edge of the Red River Valley, approximately 10 miles south of the city of Fosston. The population of Lengby was estimated to be around 200 people in 2020.
History
Lengby was founded in 1883 by Norwegian immigrants who had settled in the area. The town was named after the nearby Lengby Lake, which was named after the Norwegian word for “long”. The first settlers in the area were mostly farmers, and the town quickly grew to include a post office, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a school.
In the early 1900s, the town was home to a number of businesses, including a creamery, a lumberyard, a hotel, and a bank. The town also had a number of churches, including a Lutheran church, a Methodist church, and a Catholic church.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as many of the businesses closed and the population began to move away. By the 1970s, the population had dropped to around 100 people.
