Hoyt Lakes is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Duluth, MN–WI Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Hoyt Lakes was founded in the early 1900s as a mining town. The city was named after William Hoyt, a mining engineer who was instrumental in the development of the area. The city was incorporated in 1947.
The city was the site of the first taconite processing plant in the United States. The Reserve Mining Company opened the plant in 1957, and it operated until 1986. The plant was controversial due to its environmental impact, and it was eventually closed due to a court order.
Geography
Hoyt Lakes is located at the western end of the Mesabi Iron Range, near the shore of Lake Superior. The city is situated on the Embarrass River, which flows into Lake Superior.
The city has a total area of 4.2 square miles, of which 4.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.
Economy
Hoyt Lakes is a major center for the mining industry. The city is home to the United Taconite mine, which is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs. The mine produces taconite pellets, which are used in the steelmaking process.
The city is also home to several other businesses, including a lumber mill, a paper mill, and a manufacturing plant.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,521 people, 645 households, and 393 families residing in the city. The population density was 369.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
The median age in the city was 43.2 years. 22.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.7% were from 25 to 44; 28.3% were from 45 to 64; and 20.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.7% male and 51.3% female.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $27,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
