Duluth Summary
Duluth, Minnesota is a city located in the state of Minnesota, United States. It is the second-largest city in the state and the fourth-largest in the Midwest. The city is situated on the westernmost tip of Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes. Duluth is the county seat of St. Louis County and is part of the Twin Ports metropolitan area, which includes Superior, Wisconsin.
History
The area that is now Duluth was first inhabited by the Ojibwe people, who called the area “Gichi-oodena”, meaning “great hill”. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s, and the city was officially founded in 1856. The city was named after Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, a French explorer who explored the area in the late 1600s.
The city quickly grew in the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location on the Great Lakes and its access to the St. Louis River. The city was a major port for the transportation of iron ore, lumber, and grain. The city also became a major center for the production of steel and other metals.
