Scandia Summary

Scandia is a small city located in Washington County, Minnesota, United States. It is situated on the St. Croix River, approximately 25 miles northeast of the Twin Cities. The population was 2,979 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Scandia was first settled in the early 1800s by Swedish immigrants. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1853, and the town was officially incorporated in 1858. The name Scandia was chosen to reflect the Swedish heritage of the area.
In the late 19th century, Scandia was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several sawmills, a flour mill, and a brickyard. The railroad arrived in 1887, connecting Scandia to the Twin Cities and other parts of Minnesota.
