Scandia Summary
Scandia is a small city located in Washington County, Minnesota, United States. It is situated on the St. Croix River, approximately 25 miles northeast of the Twin Cities. The population was 2,979 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Scandia was first settled in the early 1800s by Swedish immigrants. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1853, and the town was officially incorporated in 1858. The name Scandia was chosen to reflect the Swedish heritage of the area.
In the late 19th century, Scandia was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several sawmills, a flour mill, and a brickyard. The railroad arrived in 1887, connecting Scandia to the Twin Cities and other parts of Minnesota.
Geography
Scandia is located at 45°14'N 92°51'W (45.23, -92.85). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Scandia’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several small businesses, including a winery, a brewery, and a distillery. The city also has a number of restaurants, shops, and other services.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 2,979 people, 1,093 households, and 817 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,364.2 people per square mile (526.7/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 527.3 per square mile (203.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,000, and the median income for a family was $68,000. Males had a median income of $45,000 versus $31,000 for females.
