Russell Summary

Russell, Minnesota is a small city located in the southwestern corner of the state, near the border of South Dakota. It is part of the Marshall County and is situated on the banks of the Redwood River. The city has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is known for its rural charm and friendly atmosphere.

History

The area that is now Russell was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of Norwegian immigrants. The town was originally called “Rudolph” after the first settler, Rudolph Anderson. In 1887, the name was changed to Russell in honor of a local businessman, William Russell.
The city was officially incorporated in 1891 and quickly grew to become a thriving agricultural community. The main crops grown in the area were wheat, oats, and barley. In addition, the area was known for its dairy farms and livestock.
The city experienced a period of growth in the early 1900s, with the construction of a railroad line and the opening of a post office. The population peaked in the 1920s, with over 1,500 people living in the city.
