Richfield Summary

Richfield, Minnesota is a city located in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. It is a first-ring suburb of Minneapolis, and is the fourth-largest city in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The population was 35,228 at the 2010 census.

History

Richfield was first settled in 1852 by settlers from New England. The town was originally called "Minnehaha Falls," after the nearby Minnehaha Falls. In 1854, the name was changed to Richfield, after the fertile soil found in the area. The town was incorporated in 1908.
In the early 20th century, Richfield was a popular destination for wealthy Minneapolis residents, who built large summer homes in the area. The town was also home to a number of resorts, including the Richfield Hotel, which was built in 1912 and was a popular destination for celebrities.

Geography

Richfield is located at 44°52′N 93°17′W (44.867, -93.283). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.42 square miles (21.79 km2), of which 8.35 square miles (21.62 km2) is land and 0.07 square miles (0.17 km2) is water.

Economy

Richfield is home to a number of businesses, including Best Buy, which is headquartered in the city. Other major employers include the University of Minnesota, Fairview Health Services, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 35,228 people, 15,945 households, and 8,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,203.3 people per square mile (1,619.2/km2). There were 16,890 housing units at an average density of 2,019.3 per square mile (779.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 77.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 3.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 15,945 households, out of which 25.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.7% were non-families. 33.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.9% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,902, and the median income for a family was $56,711. Males had a median income of $40,945 versus $32,039 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,845. About 5.2% of families and 7.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
