Red Wing Summary

Wing, Minnesota is a city located in Goodhue County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 16,459 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Goodhue County. The city is located along the Mississippi River near its confluence with the Chippewa River. Red Wing is home to the manufacturers of nationally known products, including Red Wing Shoes and Red Wing Pottery.

History

The area around Red Wing was first settled by Native Americans who were members of the Mdewakanton Sioux tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. The city was named after the Mdewakanton Sioux chief, Red Wing. The city was officially incorporated in 1857.
In the late 19th century, Red Wing became a major center for the production of pottery and stoneware. The city was also home to several large shoe factories, which produced shoes for the U.S. military during World War II.

Geography

Red Wing is located at 44°33′N 92°32′W (44.55, -92.53). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 10.9 square miles (28.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.

Red Wing is home to several major employers, including Red Wing Shoes, Red Wing Pottery, and the Red Wing Shoe Company. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including a number of restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 16,459 people, 6,845 households, and 4,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,509.2 people per square mile (582.3/km2). There were 7,521 housing units at an average density of 690.2 per square mile (266.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 6,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $51,919. Males had a median income of $37,813 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
