Ramsey Summary

Ramsey, Minnesota is a city located in Anoka County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 23,668 at the 2010 census. It is a northern suburb of the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

History

The area that is now Ramsey was first settled in 1844 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlers named the area after Alexander Ramsey, the first governor of Minnesota. The area was originally part of Anoka County, but was annexed by Ramsey in 1974.
The city was incorporated in 1974, and has since grown to become one of the largest cities in Anoka County. The city is home to many businesses, including the headquarters of the Anoka County Historical Society.

Geography

Ramsey is located at 45°10'17" North, 93°20'45" West (45.1714, -93.3458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Ramsey is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to several large employers, including the Anoka County Historical Society, the Anoka County Government Center, and the Anoka County Fairgrounds.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 23,668 people, 8,845 households, and 6,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,133.2 people per square mile (822.2/km2). There were 9,093 housing units at an average density of 817.3 per square mile (315.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $36,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.7% of those age 65 or over.
