Oakdale Summary

Oakdale, Minnesota is a city located in Washington County, Minnesota, United States. It is a suburb of the Twin Cities metropolitan area and is located just north of the city of Saint Paul. The population was 27,378 at the 2010 census.

History

Oakdale was first settled in 1844 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was originally called Oak Grove, but the name was changed to Oakdale in 1887. The town was incorporated in 1957.
Oakdale was originally a farming community, but in the 1950s it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to the Twin Cities. The city has since become a bedroom community for the Twin Cities, with many of its residents commuting to the cities for work.

Geography

Oakdale is located at 45°02'N 92°54'W (45.037, -92.902). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Oakdale’s economy is largely based on retail and services. The city is home to several large retail stores, including Target, Walmart, and Home Depot. There are also several restaurants and other businesses located in the city.
Oakdale is also home to several large employers, including 3M, Andersen Windows, and the University of Minnesota.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 27,378 people, 10,845 households, and 7,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,459.3 people per square mile (949.7/km2). There were 11,541 housing units at an average density of 1,037.2 per square mile (400.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $36,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
