New Brighton Summary

New Brighton, Minnesota is a city located in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. It is a northern suburb of the Twin Cities metropolitan area and is located just north of the city of Minneapolis. The population was 21,456 at the 2010 census.

History

New Brighton was first settled in 1856 by a group of settlers from New Brighton, Pennsylvania. The city was incorporated in 1957 and was named after the Pennsylvania city. The city was originally a farming community, but in the 1950s and 1960s, it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to Minneapolis.

Geography

New Brighton is located at 45°3′17″N 93°9′17″W (45.054722, -93.154722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

New Brighton is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several large employers, including the headquarters of the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the headquarters of the Minnesota State Lottery, and the headquarters of the Minnesota State High School League.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 21,456 people, 8,845 households, and 5,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,637.2 people per square mile (1,017.2/km2). There were 9,093 housing units at an average density of 1,123.2 per square mile (433.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 84.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 4.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $62,917. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $32,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
