Maplewood Summary

Maplewood is a city located in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. It is a suburb of the Twin Cities metropolitan area and is located just east of Saint Paul. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 38,018.

History

Maplewood was first settled in 1844 by a group of settlers from New England. The area was originally known as Oakdale Township, and was later renamed Maplewood in 1854. The city was officially incorporated in 1957.

Geography

Maplewood is located at 44°56'N 93°6'W (44.937, -93.097). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Maplewood is home to a variety of businesses, including 3M, Imation, and the Maplewood Mall. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 38,018 people, 15,845 households, and 9,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,417.3 people per square mile (1,320.7/km2). There were 16,845 housing units at an average density of 1,515.2 per square mile (584.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 10.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 4.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 15,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $63,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $32,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
