History
Ivanhoe was founded in 1881 by a group of Swedish immigrants. The city was named after the novel Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the city was incorporated in 1883.
The city was a major center for the production of flaxseed and other agricultural products. In the early 1900s, Ivanhoe was a major stop on the Great Northern Railway. The city was also home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a lumber yard, and a brickyard.
