Hastings Summary

Hastings, Minnesota is a city located in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 22,172 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dakota County. Hastings is situated on the Mississippi River, and is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.

History

Hastings was founded in 1857 by settlers from the east coast of the United States. The city was named after Colonel Thomas Hastings, a veteran of the War of 1812. The city was incorporated in 1858 and was the first city in Dakota County.
In the late 19th century, Hastings was a major center for the lumber industry. The city was also home to several flour mills, which were powered by the Mississippi River.

Geography

Hastings is located at 44°44'17" North, 92°47'17" West (44.738, -92.788). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Hastings is home to several major employers, including 3M, Ecolab, and Andersen Windows. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 22,172 people, 8,845 households, and 5,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,722.3 people per square mile (1,051.2/km2). There were 9,521 housing units at an average density of 1,179.2 per square mile (455.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $48,945, and the median income for a family was $58,945. Males had a median income of $41,845 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
