History

The area that is now Ham Lake was first settled in the late 1800s. The first settlers were mostly of German and Scandinavian descent. The area was originally known as “Hamlin”, after the first settler, John Hamlin. The name was later changed to “Ham Lake”, after the lake that was located in the area.
The city of Ham Lake was officially incorporated in 1957. The city was originally a small farming community, but has since grown into a suburban city.

Geography

Ham Lake is located at 45°14′N 93°17′W (45.23, -93.28). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 15.7 square miles (40.7 km2) is land and 0.5 square miles (1.2 km2) is water.
The city is located on the northern border of Anoka County, and is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The city is bordered by the cities of Blaine, Andover, and Oak Grove.

Economy

The economy of Ham Lake is largely based on retail and services. The city is home to several large retail stores, including Target, Walmart, and Home Depot. The city also has several restaurants, banks, and other businesses.
The city is also home to several industrial and manufacturing businesses. The largest employer in the city is the Anoka County Airport, which employs over 1,000 people.

As of the 2010 census, there were 21,272 people, 8,072 households, and 5,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,355.2 people per square mile (524.2/km2). There were 8,521 housing units at an average density of 541.2 per square mile (209.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 8,072 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
