Geneva Summary

Geneva is a small city located in Freeborn County, Minnesota. It is situated on the south bank of the Shell Rock River, about 25 miles west of Albert Lea. The city was founded in 1856 and incorporated in 1876. As of the 2010 census, the population of Geneva was 1,068.

Geography

Geneva is located at 43°37'N 93°25'W (43.6167, -93.4167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.
The Shell Rock River flows through the city, and is a popular spot for fishing and canoeing. The city is also home to a number of parks, including Geneva Park, which features a playground, picnic area, and a walking path.

Economy

Geneva’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to a number of agricultural businesses, including a feed mill, a grain elevator, and a dairy. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing businesses, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a machine shop.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,068 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,179.2 people per square mile (454.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 517.2 per square mile (199.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
