Fridley Summary
Fridley, Minnesota is a city located in Anoka County, Minnesota, United States. It is a northern suburb of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 27,208.
History
Fridley was first settled in 1854 by a group of Swedish immigrants. The city was named after the Fridley family, who were among the first settlers. The city was incorporated in 1949.
Geography
Fridley is located at 45°04′N 93°17′W (45.07, -93.28). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.5 km2), of which 8.6 square miles (22.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Fridley is home to several large employers, including Medtronic, a medical device manufacturer, and Target Corporation, a retail giant. The city also has a number of smaller businesses, including restaurants, shops, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 27,208 people, 11,717 households, and 7,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,150.3 people per square mile (1,214.2/km2). There were 12,541 housing units at an average density of 1,450.3 per square mile (561.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.7% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 11,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
