Columbia Heights Summary

Columbia Heights is a city located in Anoka County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 19,496 at the 2010 census. It is a first-ring suburb of Minneapolis, located directly north of the city.

History

The area that is now Columbia Heights was first settled in 1851 by a group of German immigrants. The area was originally known as "Oneka," a Dakota word meaning "second village." The area was later renamed "Columbia," after Christopher Columbus. The city was officially incorporated in 1921.

Geography

Columbia Heights is located at 45°02'N 93°17'W (45.037, -93.286). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Columbia Heights is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing companies, including 3M, Medtronic, and Andersen Windows.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 19,496 people, 8,072 households, and 4,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,637.2 people per square mile (1,789.2/km2). There were 8,521 housing units at an average density of 2,039.2 per square mile (788.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 3.2% from other races, and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 8,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
