Champlin Summary

Champlin, Minnesota is a city located in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 23,089 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

History

Champlin was first settled in 1852 by a group of settlers from New England. The town was named after the first settler, William Champlin. The town was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, the town was a major center for the lumber industry. The town was also home to a number of brickyards and other industries.
In the early 20th century, the town was a major center for the dairy industry. The town was also home to a number of small businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, and a canning factory.

Geography

Champlin is located at 45°09′N 93°25′W (45.15, -93.41). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 10.9 square miles (28.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.

Economy

Champlin’s economy is largely based on the service industry. The city is home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer and a printing company.

As of the census of 2010, there were 23,089 people, 8,845 households, and 6,093 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,097.3 people per square mile (808.7/km2). There were 9,093 housing units at an average density of 835.2 per square mile (322.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 3.7% Asian, 2.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.
