Big Lake Summary
Big Lake, Minnesota is a city located in Sherburne County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 10,060 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.
History
Big Lake was first settled in 1855 by a group of settlers from Wisconsin. The town was originally called Big Lake Station, and was a stop on the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was officially incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Big Lake was a popular tourist destination, with many resorts and hotels located on the lake. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a creamery, a flour mill, and a sawmill.
Geography
Big Lake is located at 45°19'17" North, 93°41'17" West (45.3214, -93.6881). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles, of which, 7.7 square miles is land and 0.5 square miles is water.

Big Lake is home to a number of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and other services.

As of the census of 2010, there were 10,060 people, 3,845 households, and 2,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,303.2 people per square mile. There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 527.7 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 2.3% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
